Above the Line Leadership, in partnership with Coaching the Global Village has two proposed projects in two developing countries in 2009:
Costa Rica (June 2009 & February 2010)

Nepal (October 2009)

NOTE: Ursula Pottinga is an original founding member of Coaching the Global Village and designed the bulk of the training curriculum we utilize.

COSTA RICA

Cobano, Costa RicaCoaching the Global Village coach training will be offered by Above the Line Leadership to train a group (approx 12-15) of high potential community leaders in the small town of Cobano to act as peer coaches, offering much-needed support and counseling in this growing community.

Resources are very limited in this part of the country, which is about 6 hours from the capital of San Jose. There is one psychologist and appointments take anywhere from 2-4 months. A peer coaching network would be able to offer support with parenting, relationship and work issues, not to mention helping each other develop broader visions for their life.

This training fits our philosophy of empowering local citizens to continue the work using the coach approach, We will also follow up with those trained for 6 months following the training.

SCOPE OF WORK

We plan to offer two workshops to begin with—a one-day introduction in June of 2009, and a follow-up three-day course next February, 2010 (for which we would submit a separate proposal). We are starting slow in order to develop long-term relationships of trust with the local leaders. And we will also offer monthly follow along coaching to keep the skills sustainable and practical.

The one day workshop on June 16 will cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to coaching (a new concept in Costa Rica);
  • Holding others as naturally creative, resourceful, and whole;
  • Effective listening skills; and
  • Asking powerful questions
  • Possibility thinking
  • Creating accountability and action steps to be accomplished
  • Teach circle process for group coaching conversations.

All written materials have been translated into Spanish and a local Peace Corps volunteer will be providing translation for the workshop. One of the partners in Above the Line, Ann Betz, lives in this community and has been using her relationships with local leaders to generate interest and attendance.

UPDATE: A two-day workshop was held in the small town of Cobano, Costa Rica, during which CGV partnered with Above the Line to train a group of 12 community leaders. (The trainers were Ann Betz and Ursula Pottinga, originators of Americoach, who partnered with CGV in the first years of operations.) Counseling resources are very limited in this part of the country. Workshop participants will now act as peer coaches within their community, offering much-needed support with parenting, relationship, work issues and counseling in this growing community. We will stay in close contact with participants for 6 months following the workshop training.

NEPAL

Cobano, Costa RicaAbove the Line has made a connection with the Bright Futures Foundation (BFF), which operates a medical clinic in the town of Bhotechaur, in the foothills of the Himalayas and also raises funds to send local children to school in Kathmandu. In conjunction with the medical clinic, local women have formed a successful micro-lending cooperative, funding such projects as candle-making, goat purchase, and more. Leaders of this cooperative have asked BFF to provide leadership development training so that they can be more effective at supporting local women and enrolling them in the cooperative. BFF has in turn asked Above the Line to create and deliver a workshop on coaching skills and leadership for approximately 12 women this fall in Bhotechaur . (For more information on the Bright Futures Foundation, see www.brightfuturesfoundation.org.)

SCOPE OF WORK

The goal of this two-day workshop in Nepal is to train these local leaders as both coaches and teachers. The goal is that by the end of the second day, they are equipped to both work one-on-one as peer coaches and train other women in coaching and leadership skills.

The two-day workshop in October 2009 will cover the following topics:

DAY ONE

  • Introduction to coaching (a new concept in Costa Rica);
  • Holding others as naturally creative, resourceful, and whole;
  • Effective listening skills; and
  • Asking powerful questions

DAY TWO

  • Working with groups;
  • Finding and using your own natural leadership gifts; and
  • Practice teaching the Day One curriculum.

We will provide written materials for the leaders to use for future workshops (timelines, etc.). A translator will be provided by the Bright Futures Foundation.

OTHER

All our workshops are highly interactive and experiential, utilizing many effective methods of adult learning, including individual and large and small group work, art, nature, movement as well as one to one practice of all coaching skills. The workshops will also include theoretical overview and providing context and background for learning.

ABOUT ABOVE THE LINE

Above the Line Leadership is uniquely positioned to partner in bringing coaching to the global village. The two partners, Ann Betz, CPCC and Ursula Pottinga, CPCC are the founders and former executive directors of AmeriCoach, one of the first non-profit organizations focused on coaching in the short history of this profession. During their tenure with AmeriCoach, they developed a highly-praised coaching skills and leadership development curriculum, which they have since made available at no cost to Coaching the Global Village. They also trained hundreds of volunteers and non-profit staff in the art of using these skills to be more effective and make a bigger impact in their organizations.

In addition, both Ann and Ursula are themselves Global Citizens! Ursula, a native of Germany, has lived in over four countries and is a passionate world traveler. For the past four years Ann has lived with her family in Costa Rica, where she has strong connections with local leaders and the community. This past year, she has run a weekly drop in art class for local women which has created a flurry of artistic endeavors and much discussion about creating a local artist cooperative.
