There is a philosophical parable of two men chained up in a cave. They are facing the wall and between them and the opening of the cave is a fire. For entertainment these men made images on the wall and for a while these images started to shape their reality.
One day while they were dancing, the chain of one of the men snapped. As he had never been unchained before – or at least could never remember a time where he was unchained – he was afraid. He stood in place for a few moments, uncertain of what to do. After a while he turned around and the first thing that he noticed was the fire. He stared at the fire for moment and after a few moments he looked up an saw the opening of the cave.
For the first time in his life he noticed the “light”. He walks toward the light, and as he started to take the first steps his friend yells out to him, “Hey where are you going? What are you doing?” The man responds, “I see light.” The other guy says, “That is impossible.”
As the chained man is talking the unchained man notices the shadows on the wall. After awhile he begins moving towards the opening of the cave again. The closer he gets to the “light” the dimmer the other guys voice becomes. Finally, after some time he reaches the opening of the cave and steps out into the “light”. He says, “WOW! I have never seen so many colors or smelt so many smells. I never knew that this even existed!”
In his excitement he runs back in to the cave and he tells the other guy, “Hey you have to break these chains and get free! There is another world out there yet to be explored and what you see on the wall is not life! Break free!” The other guys responds, “You are crazy! There is nothing out there. There is only this.”
So the unchained realizes that he has a “Choice” to make…to stay behind and continue to believe that the life is in the cave, in the shadows. Or to leave the cave and experience life outside…to live in the “light.” He chose the later.
The moral of this parable is that one can choose to live in the shadows of fear, doubt, uncertainty and all of the other burdens that life seems to come with. Or one can break free of these burdens and live life to the fullest. A life full of prosperity, joy and fulfillment.
The value of Life Coaching is that it helps one come to the place where they free themselves of the chains that may be holding them back from having the life that they truly want. As a result of this life they find themselves living in the shadows in a place where something else is driving them, making them believe that whatever they have is all that there is. That is not the case when one “chooses” to break free and leave behind all those things that may hold them back in life; when they decide to hush the inner and outer voices that are calling them back into that cave.
It is never too late to break free and step out into the light. All one has to do is make that “choice” and take those steps. Life Coaching is a good tool to use to help break free and move forward. There is no better time than now to stop dancing in the shadows and experience the life that you truly want!
